College Roundup: Jackson picks up football honor

Cal Poly junior cornerback Asa Jackson was picked for The Sports Network/ Football Championship Subdivision All-America third team.

A three-time All-Great West Conference first-teamer, Jackson had 55 tackles, two interceptions, nine pass break-ups and ranked 14th in the nation with a punt return average of 12.6 yards.

The only other Great West player honored was Southern Utah receiver Tysson Poots, who made the first team.

Honorees were selected by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries and was based on regular-season accomplishments only.

Cal Poly swimming coach honored

When Cal Poly senior swimmer Peter Kline placed seventh at a national-level meet this month, it paved the way for Mustangs head coach Tom Milich to receive his 12th Coach of Excellence honor from the American Swimming Coaches Association.

The association honors coaches who guide a swimmer to a top-eight finish at a USA Swimming national-level meet or a U.S. collegiate championship.

Kline placed seventh in the men’s 400 individual medley at the 2010 AT&T Short Course National Championships earlier this month.

Milich is in his fifth year with Cal Poly, whose men are competing in the Pac-10 this season and whose women will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
