Cuesta volleyball team wins
The Cuesta College volleyball team avenged a heartbreaking five-set loss to Ventura College earlier in the year by sweeping them on the road.Earlier in the season, the Cougars led 14-6 in the fifth set before visiting Ventura took 10 straight points for the win.
This time, the Cougars (10-9) made sure that the game wouldn’t get that close.
“We thought about it,” said coach Roche Nystrom. “We said, ‘We are going to play each point one at a time and not panic.’ ”
This time, “one point at a time” resulted in a 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 victory, made all the sweeter by the fact it was at Ventura.
The Cougars won by controlling the front line and not making mistakes.
Cuesta combined for six solo blocks and 21 assisted blocks, and only had six hitting errors.
Tess Gilkey controlled the action with 14 kills and only one error on 25 attempts. Daniella Florant led the Cougars on defense with two solo blocks and seven assisted blocks.
