Julie McKee scored off a rebound in front of the UC Riverside net in the 33rd minute, and the Cal Poly women’s soccer team held on for a 1-0 win Sunday in Riverside, the Mustangs’ first in Big West Conference play.
Cal Poly improved to 6-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big West. With just one victory this season, the Highlanders (1-9-2) fell to 0-2-0 in conference play.
Mustangs goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin came away with seven saves, but the most important stop might have been made for her by the post. UC Riverside’s Candis Novis broke free of the Cal Poly defense in the 49th minute and was able to get a foot on the ball just before colliding with Gauvin. The ball bounced towards the goal but caromed off the left post.
