Cal Poly's Haniger earns freshman baseball honor

Cal Poly outfielder Mitch Haniger was named to the Ping! Baseball Freshman All-American second team Tuesday.

Haniger, the Big West Conference freshman of the year, hit .326 with 15 doubles and was second on the team with seven home runs and 46 RBI.

He collected Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors last week.

Haniger joined Cal Poly second baseman Matt Jensen, who earned All-American honors as a freshman in 2009 while Wes Dorrell and Luke Yoder earned the honor in 2007.

San Luis Obispo Rattlers 3, Central Coast Bulls 1

The Rattlers scored what turned out to be the winning run in the first inning at Barnhart Field in Paso Robles.

Zach Steele, a Cuesta College product, walked to lead off the game and advanced to third on an error that saw Nigel Morton move to second base. Steele and Morton both scored on RBI groundouts.

Former San Luis Obispo High standout David Murillo picked up the win, giving up one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked none.

Paso Robles High product Kyle Wise had two hits for the Rattlers (6-4), the only San Luis Obispo player with multiple hits.

His triple in the fourth inning drove in Matt Anderson for the game’s final run.

Conejo Oaks 6, San Luis Obispo Blues 5

Kansas State’s Mike Kindel gave the Blues (4-5, 3-4 California Collegiate League) a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run triple.

The Oaks, however, scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a late lead and then held on to win.
