College Roundup: Another softball honor for Cahn

Cal Poly softball player Anna Cahn was named Thursday to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-West Region second team for the second time.

Cahn was named Big West Conference Field Player of the Year earlier this week, making her the third player to win the league’s field player and pitcher of the year awards. She won the latter in 2009.

Cahn led all conference hitters with a .393 batting average and a .626 slugging percentage and set school records for on-base percentage (.586) and walks (45).

She led the Mustangs with 24 RBI while also adding 10 doubles and five home runs.

Cal Poly (23-24,12-9) finished the conference season in third place a year after advancing to an NCAA Regional final.

Cal Poly's Herrera wins Big West track honor

Cal Poly’s Taylor Herrera was named the Big West Conference Track and Field Men’s Freshman of the Year after finishing third in the 100 (10.61 seconds), 200 (21.50) and 1,600 relay (41.38) during the Big West Conference Championships last weekend in Northridge.

Herrera has the fastest 200 time in conference this season (21.10) and the second-fastest 100 (10.49).

Herrera will compete at the NCAA West Regional May 27-29 in Austin, Texas.

Lee inducted into baseball Hall

Current Cal Poly baseball head coach and former Cuesta College coach Larry Lee was inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame at Fresno City College.

Lee guided the Cougars for 16 seasons (1987-2002), taking Cuesta to the California Community College State Final Four four times.Lee’s teams qualified for the Southern California Regions each of his last six years at the school, including a No. 1 seed in 1999 and No. 2 in 2002.

He had an overall record of 460-241-23 during his tenure, including a state-best 44 wins in 1997. Lee’s win total is the 15th-best in the state’s community college history.

The Cougars won nine Western State Conference titles in Lee’s 16 years.
