LAS VEGAS — Cal Poly had a team place second Saturday in the one-day FLW College Fishing Western Division tournament at Lake Mead.
Scott Hellesen and Damian Bean brought six bass to the scales. Their 11-pound, 2-ounce weight was just nine ounces behind the winning team from Sonoma State.
Hellensen and Bean won $5,000, split evenly between the university and the university’s bass-fishing club.
Sonoma’s Luke Haley and Alex Christianson earned $10,000, split evenly between the university and its fishing club.

There were 40 teams in the competition. Cal Poly’s other team, of Joe Malm and Joe Gardiner, placed eighth with five fish weighing 7-7.
This was the second in a series of four Western Division FLW College tournaments. The next competition will be June 12 at the California Delta.
In the first tournament in January at Lake Shasta, Hellensen and Bean placed fifth while Malm and Gardiner finished 29th in the 40-team field.
