Rebecca Patton and Kendal Hennings hit home runs as Cal Poly’s softball team beat Long Beach State 6-2 on Sunday to win the rubber game of a Big West Conference series in Long Beach.
The victory keeps the Mustangs (20-18, 9-3 Big West) in first place by one game in the Big West ahead of its weekend showdown with second-place Cal State Northridge beginning Saturday at Cal Poly.
Patton hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Hennings added a three-run shot in the third for the Mustangs.
Patton, a freshman, pitched 42⁄3 innings in relief of Anna Cahn and earned the win.Cahn’s RBI double in the seventh inning completed the scoring for Cal Poly.
Kristen Pocock had a two-run single in the third for Long Beach State (21-22, 5-7).
49ers starter Taylor Petty allowed both home runs and took the loss.

J.J. Thompson led Cal Poly (10-26, 3-9 Big West) with two hits and an RBI. Matt Jensen added a hit and an RBI. The Mustangs were swept for the third time this season and have lost 20 of their past 24 games.
Cal Poly starter Eugene Wright allowed six runs — four earned — in 52⁄3 innings and took the loss.
Gary Brown scored three runs and went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases for Big West leaders Cal State Fullerton (24-13, 10-2).
Titans starter Tyler Pill was the winning pitcher, allowing only one hit through five innings, striking out six.
Cal Poly hosts Long Beach State at Baggett Stadium on Friday.
