Mustangs in fourth at Big West golf championship

The Cal Poly women’s golf team moved into fourth place Monday after the second round of the Big West Conference Championships at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Mustangs’ Stephanie Yocum, the defending conference champion, bounced back from an 85 in Sunday’s first round, carding a 76 on the 6,034-yard course, while teammates Julia Puscheck (77), Alicia Weber and Maddy Fletcher (78 apiece) also had solid showings for a four-person total of 309.

Weber is tied for 14th place entering the last round, with Fletcher tied for 16th and Puscheck tied for 18th. Yocum is in 23rd.

Following the second round, Cal Poly — which has a 36-hole total of 633 — moved up from sixth place.UC Davis, which shot a 299 on Monday for a 597 total, holds a 14-stroke lead over Long Beach State for first place heading into this morning’s final round. UC Irvine (612) is in third.

Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside are tied for fifth at 638, while Cal State Fullerton’s first-year program sits at 663. Chelsea Stelzmiller of UC Davis, a two-time Big West runner-up, had the only even-par round of the day, posting three birdies and three bogeys for a 72.

Overall, she’s one stroke ahead of Aggies teammate Amy Simanton and Long Beach State’s Reina Rogers, each of whom has a 148 total.
