College Roundup: Bullpen like a broken record: Cal Poly loses on late rally

For the second consecutive game, the Cal Poly baseball team rallied from a five-run deficit late, only to see the bullpen give the lead back as the Mustangs dropped a 12-8 Big West Conference game at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.

Cal Poly trailed 7-2 entering the sixth inning but rallied to score three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie the score.

After the Matadors (20-14, 2-3 Big West) took an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly again rallied to tie the score on a two-out RBI single by Luke Yoder in the eighth.

But the Mustangs bullpen again struggled in the eighth as Tommy Erlin gave up a two-out, bases-loaded triple to blow the game open.

Matt Jensen had three hits for Cal Poly (9-23, 2-6) and was the only player on the team with multiple hits.

DJ Mauldin started for the Mustangs, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and five walks in four innings. He struck out three.

Bobby Crocker had a solo home run and a walk for Cal Poly, while David Van Ostrand and D.J. Gentile each had a double and two RBI.

The series concludes at 1 this afternoon in Northridge.

Oxnard 3, Cuesta 0

The Cougars (15-15, 6-8 Western State Conference) were held to just five hits in a shutout loss.

Phillip Gerber took the loss for Cuesta, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

Max Duval had Cuesta’s lone extra-base hit with a double.

Foy also picked up the crucial final point in singles beating William Schumacher 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.

“It was great to see Rob go out on a great note with the win,” Cal Poly head coach Justin McGrath said in a release. “He is an exceptional young man.”

Also winning singles matches for Cal Poly were Fawcett and Drew Jacobs.

The Mustangs saw four seniors play their last home dual and sent them off in dominating fashion.

The doubles team of Brittany Blalock and Suzie Matzenauer improved to 17-1 with an 8-2 win that helped catapult the Mustangs to their 16th doubles point in 20 matches this season.

Blalock beat Nadia Sakhakorn 6-1, 6-1 while Matzenauer, Steffi Wong, Alexa Lee, Diane Filip and Jocelyn Davis also won singles matches for Cal Poly (14-6, 6-2).
