College Roundup: Cahn honored by Big West again

Cal Poly’s Anna Cahn won her seventh career Big West Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week award on Monday.

In the past week, the junior lefthander from Los Alamitos accounted for all three of the Mustangs’ wins at the Stanford-hosted Louisville Slugger Classic, posting an ERA of 0.41 while striking out 20 batters and walking none through 17 innings.

During the week, Cahn (8-3) held the opposition to a .212 batting average.

Cal Poly golf teams in the lead

The Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf teams both lead at the Cal State Bakersfield Spring Invitational entering this morning’s final round at the Bakersfield Country Club.

The Mustangs men led by 13 strokes, carding a four-person 36-hole, 2-under-574 total. Cal State Bakersfield and Bakersfield College were both close behind at 587.

Cal Poly’s Pace Johnson had back-to-back rounds of 70, leading teammate Jarod Knight’s total of 141. Arroyo Grande High grad Bryan Pierce is tied at eighth for Cal Poly at 146.

On the women’s side, Cal Poly leads by 10 strokes. The Mustangs shot a four-person 313 total Monday. UC Riverside was second at 323, followed by Seattle at 324.

Cal Poly’s Julia Heath Puscheck was the individual leader after 18 holes at 75, for a two-stroke lead over UC Riverside’s Amelia Ek.

Former prep stars get action in spring game

Two former San Luis Obispo County prep football stars made tackles for losses in the San Diego State spring game on Saturday.

Nick Tenhaeff, a 2009 Atascadero High grad entering his redshirt freshman season, had three tackles for losses and a sack.

Meanwhile, Jerome Long, a 2008 Morro Bay High grad heading into his junior season, added one tackle for a loss.
