College Roundup: Cal Poly adds future FBS football opponents

A day after reporting that the football team would play its first-ever Pac-10 opponent, Cal Poly announced it would play six other Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the next four seasons.

Aside from a visit to Tempe for a game against Arizona State in 2015, the Mustangs will play Fresno State twice in four years, including Oct. 2 this year.

“I think this will raise our visibility, both in the community and it also points us in the direction where we want to be,” Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh said in a release.

The second meeting is scheduled for Sept. 7 2013, with Cal Poly taking on Wyoming, another FBS school, a week later. The Mustangs will contest two FBS games in 2011, including a Sept. 24 game at Northern Illinois.

Cal Poly will also play a familiar FBS foe in 2011, when it travels to San Diego State.

The Mustangs have claimed two in a row in the series, both closely contested games. Cal Poly’s last win against an FBS team came against the Aztecs in 2008.

Cal Poly is 4-20 against FBS schools since 1980, including losses to Ohio (28-10) and San Jose State (19-9) last season.
