College Roundup: Cal Poly wrestling team tops Arizona State

The No. 16 Cal Poly wrestling team edged Arizona State 20-18 in a Pac-10 dual meet on Friday in Mott Gym.

Technical falls by Ryan Smith and Filip Novachkov, and a major decision by Chase Pami gave the Mustangs (7-3, 4-1) just enough bonus points to pick up the win.

Both teams won five matches with Cal Poly forfeiting the 125-pound bout.

Smith beat Michael Haw-kins 23-7 at 197 while Novachkov, ranked No. 5 at 141, earned a dominating 16-1 win over No. 15 Chris Drouin.

Pami earned an 18-6 major decision over Te Edwards at 157. Other winners for Cal Poly were Ryan DesRoches at 174 and Boris Novachkov at 133.

Arizona State (8-6, 3-2) owns a 31-10 advantage in the head-to-head series. Cal Poly won for just the second time in the past 20 meetings with the Sun Devils.

Cuesta baseball games postponed

Cuesta College’s schedule baseball game Friday at Orange Coast was rained out and today’s schedule game has also been postponed because of the threat of rain.

Cuesta head Bob Miller said no makeup dates have been announced.

Cuesta opened its season Thursday with a 7-2 loss to Orange Coast.
