College Roundup: McConnell heats up, but Cal Poly volleyball falls to Long Beach State

The Cal Poly volleyball team got a match-high 12 kills from freshman outside hitter Megan McConnell in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 loss to No. 22 Long Beach State (10-3, 3-0) on Saturday in Long Beach.

The Mustangs (5-11, 1-3 Big West) hit just .106 one night after being held to a .040 hitting percentage in a three-game loss at Cal State Fullerton.

Freshman middle blocker Jennifer Keddy had eight kills for Cal Poly, and freshman setter Anuhea Keanini had a match-high 30 assists.

Cal Poly junior libero Alison Mort led all players with 18 digs.

Caitlin Ledoux and Naomi Washington led the 49ers with 12 kills apiece.

The Mustangs next play at Cal State Northridge on Friday.

Women’s Water Polo

Cuesta 20, West Valley 11; Cuesta 12, Diablo Valley 11, 2 OT

Cuesta’s Morgan Thompson scored 11 total goals, including the game winner in sudden death overtime to propel the Cougars (7-10) to a sixth-place finish at the Rabobank Tournament in San Luis Obispo.

Ashley Smith, who missed the first day of the tournament with an illness, returned to score five goals in the win over West Valley.

Cuesta goalie Aubree McAtee made 12 saves in the two matches, including 10 against Diablo Valley.
