The Cal Poly volleyball team was picked to finish seventh in the Big West Conference, according to a preseason poll of conference coaches released Wednesday.
The Mustangs went 4-12 against conference opponents last season en route to a seventh-place finish among the nine teams competing. Hawaii is favored to win the Big West after picking up eight first-place votes. Long Beach State, which went undefeated on the way to the 2014 title, was picked second.
UC Santa Barbara was chosen third, followed by CSUN (fourth), UC Davis (fifth) and UC Irvine (sixth). UC Riverside (eighth) and Cal State Fullerton (ninth) rounded out the poll.
Cal Poly will feature a young team, with 11 underclassmen, three seniors and one junior. Sophomore outside hitter Raeann Greisen returns after she earned Big West all-freshman team honors in 2014.
Senior libero Nicole Kessler, sophomore setter Taylor Nelson and junior middle blocker Taylor Gruenewald also will be expected to play key roles for the Mustangs.
