Cal Poly looked to the past when hiring its women's golf coach of the future.
The university announced Thursday that Sofie Aagaard, who was a volunteer assistant coach for the women's program in 2012, has been named the head coach of the women's golf program.
Aagaard will take over for Scott Cartwright, who was the head coach for both the men's and women's teams the past 12 seasons. Cartwright will stay on as the men's coach.
Aagaard, a native of Sweden, graduated from Cal in 2006 where she was a three-time All-American. After college, she played on the Symetra Tour and briefly on the LPGA Tour. Her most recent stop was back at Cal for the past three seasons where she was an assistant coach for a team that twice reached the NCAA national championship.

The hire was made possible, according to the school, in part by a $1.1 million donation from local philanthropists Michael and Sammy Pineau.
The Cal Poly women's golf team will begin the season Sept. 14 at the Hobble Creek Classic in Utah.
