COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Cuesta College baseball team improves playoff chances with win over L.A. Pierce

The Cuesta College baseball team helped its postseason chances Thursday, overcoming a four-run deficit to win 6-5 over visiting L.A. Pierce.

The Cougars (20-15, 15-8 Western State Conference) trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Garrett Giovannelli hit an RBI single to score Kyle Raubinger and start the comeback.

Josh Falco and TK McWhertor each scored to make it 4-3 at the end of the sixth. Giovannelli had another RBI single in the eighth inning to make it 5-4 before McWhertor had a two-run single to score RJ Hassey and Steven Pico and win the game.

The Cougars finish their season today against L.A. Pierce at 2:30 p.m. With a win and a Santa Barbara loss, Cuesta would clinch a share of the Western State-North division title.

Cal Poly men's tennis wins at Big West Tournament

The Cal Poly men’s tennis team beat UC Riverside 4-0 in the opening round of the Big West Tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The fourth-seeded Mustangs (14-9) picked up the doubles point after the duo of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang won its seventh consecutive doubles match 6-2, and freshmen Axel Damiens and Lucas Lesoeur won 6-2 as well. From there, No. 4 singles player Naveen Beasley won 6-0, 6-1 before Donovan won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Corey Pang won at No. 3 singles to clinch the match.

Cal Poly plays in the semifinals against top-seeded UC Irvine today at 3 p.m.

Cal Poly women's tennis advance to quarterfinals in Big West Tournament

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team also beat UC Riverside 4-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Tournament at Indian Wells.

In doubles, Cal Poly’s Louise Oxnevad and Dane Joubert won 8-1 over Karla Dulay and Tamilla Vaksman, and the team of Zoe Oedekerk and Molly Reed had an 8-0 victory over UC Riverside’s Kassie Truong and Caroline Hall.

Oedekerk won 6-1, 6-0 in her singles match over Tamilla, and Reed topped Dulay 6-1, 6-2. Hannah Stone added a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Hall.

Cal Poly (5-15) faces No. 1-seeded Long Beach State at 8 a.m. today in the quarterfinal round.
