The Cal Poly baseball team came into the weekend series with UC Santa Barbara on a five-game winning streak.
Now the Mustangs are headed into the final game of a four-game road trip after losing two out of three to the rival Gauchos, the latest a 7-3 loss Sunday at Santa Barbara.
Gauchos left-hander Domenic Mazza allowed just five hits over eight innings to earn the win.
Cal Poly’s pitching struggles in Sunday games continued, with Erich Uelmen, Taylor Chris and Michael Gomez combining to allow 11 hits and seven runs in 5 2⁄3 innings. Chris took the loss.

In Sunday games this year, the Mustangs (16-20, 5-4 Big West Conference) sport a 6.87 ERA.
Robby Nesovic and Campbell Wear had two RBI apiece for UCSB (28-9, 6-3 Big West). Nesovic had four hits.
Mark Mathias had two hits and an RBI for Cal Poly, and John Schuknecht also had two hits. Pinch-hitters Kevin Morgan and Josh George had an RBI each for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly visits Santa Clara on Tuesday night, then returns home to host Long Beach State for a three-game series starting Friday.
Cal Poly at Big West Championships
The Mustangs had three golfers in the top 10 and sit in third place overall after the first round.
Sophie Bergland was tied for third after a 1-under 71, Jamie Binns was seventh after a 1-over 73 and Jamie Harada was tied for eighth with a 2-over 74. All three are freshman.
UC Davis’ Blair Lewis is the individual leader with a 4-under 68.
The Aggies also led the team competition, with a 288 total. Hawaii was second at 291, and the Mustangs were at 293.

In a makeup of a Feb. 22 rainout, the Mustangs got the road win with neither team playing doubles.
Hannah Stone, Emily Gibbens, Zoe Oederkerk and Sayaka Tsugai all earned singles wins for Cal Poly (4-15, 1-7 Big West).
