COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Cal Poly baseball team finishes sweep of Hawaii

Despite falling behind 2-0 after the first two innings, the Cal Poly baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Hawaii with a 12-5 victory Sunday at Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs scored four runs in the third innings and another four in the fourth to build a big lead and cruised to the win.

Catcher Brett Barbier finished a double short of the cycle and went 3 for 4 with six RBI for Cal Poly (14-18, 4-2 Big West Conference). He hit a two-run triple in the third innings, a three-run homer in the fourth and had an RBI single in the seventh inning.

Mark Mathias also had three hits, including an RBI triple, and finished with two RBI. Zack Zehner had RBI singles in the fourth and the fifth innings, and John Schuknecht and Ryan Drobny added two hits apiece for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly starter Justin Calomeni allowed two runs and didn’t get out of the second inning, and Michael Gomez came in and gave up three runs in 4 2⁄3 innings to earn the win in relief.

Erich Uelmen went the final 3 1⁄3 to earn his first save, striking out three while allowing three hits.

Jarrett Arakawa took the loss for Hawaii (12-23, 3-6).

SOFTBALL

Cal Poly 2, UC Davis 1

Mustangs starter Sierra Hyland tossed a complete game in a pitchers' duel in Davis.

Cal Poly’s Stephanie Herward had a two-out, two-run triple in the first inning, and Hyland made that stand up in the win.

Hyland gave up six hits, walked four and struck out five for Cal Poly (21-22, 4-5 Big West).

Heyward went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Courtney Tyler, Emily Ceccacci and Breana West each had a hit for the Mustangs. Tyler and Hyland each scored a run.

Amy Nunez had two hits for UC Davis (14-22, 2-7).

MEN’S GOLF

Cal Poly at El Macero Classic

Mitch Martin shot an even-par 72 in the final round to earn a third-place individual finish.

The Mustangs took sixth as a team with a score of 890.

UC Davis won the event with an 865. Marquette and Sacramento State tied for second at 875.

Martin, an Arroyo Grande High grad, finished at 1-under 215.

UC Davis’ Luke Vivolo shot 10-under 206 to win the individual title.

Cam Price (223) tied for 20th and Justin De Los Santos (224) tied for 24th for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs will host the Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship on April 26-28 at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
