Cal Poly baseball team loses finale at Oregon State, still wins series

The Cal Poly baseball team dropped the series finale against Oregon State 4-2 on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore., stopping the Mustangs’ modest two-game win streak.

Peter Van Gansen and Brian  Mundell had RBI singles for Cal Poly (9-15), which briefly took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Travis Eckert (3-0) allowed six hits and two runs over six innings to earn the win for Oregon State (21-7). Mitch Hickey pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save.

Mundell had two of Cal Poly’s six hits.

Michael Gomez (0-2) took the loss for the Mustangs, allowing an inherited runner to score and giving up a run during the Beavers’ half of the fifth, when they scored twice to take a 3-2 lead.

Cal Poly starter Andrew Bernstein allowed two runs on three hits in four innings.

Cal Poly travels to Pepperdine on Tuesday and then heads to Cal State Fullerton to open Big West Conference play Thursday against the Titans.
