College Roundup: Zehner powers Mustangs past Hornets in baseball

Zack Zehner hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning as the Cal Poly baseball team won 6-2 against Sacramento State on Thursday at home.

The game pitted two teams who played in the San Luis Obispo NCAA Regional last season. In the first of four straight home games against the Hornets, the Mustangs (5-9) went up 2-1 in the third inning when Alec Smith scored off of a double from Mark Mathias.

From there, Cal Poly maintained the lead, stretching it to 5-1 before each team scored in the seventh inning.

Peter Van Gansen went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs in the win, and Andrew Bernstein picked up his third win of the season on the mound.

Cuesta 4, Oxnard 0

Brendan Jenkins pitched his third consecutive shutout to lead the Cougars (9-10, 7-3 Western State Conference).

Jenkins has pitched 34 consecutive scoreless innings to break the previous school record of 302⁄3 innings set by Mike Gray in 1997.

Josh Falco went 3 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Cougars offensively.
