College Roundup: Cal Poly women's soccer team makes early goals stand up in win

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team beat UC Irvine 2-1 on the road Friday night.

The Mustangs struck early, scoring in the fifth minute, when Elise Krieghoff turned and fired from the right corner of the box to find the back of the net off a pass from Megan Abutin.

In the 19th minute, Krieghoff and Abutin combined again, this time to assist Lydia Anderson, who was alone at the top of the box on a corner kick.

UC Irvine answered early in the second half, finding the net in the 55th minute after the ball fell to Blanca Frontino following a scrum in the box.

Cal Poly’s (8-8, 3-2 Big West Conference) Alyssa Gianetti had seven saves to stave off the Anteaters (8-8, 3-2 Big West).

L.A. Pierce 2, Cuesta 0

The Cougars struggled to find any offense in the second half as L.A. Pierce scored in the 42nd and 54th minute to remain undefeated in the Western State Conference.

“Once they got that second goal we were facing too much defense in the box,” Cuesta coach Bob Wilson said in a news release.

Cuesta (6-6-2, 1-3-2 WSC) returns to play Tuesday against Moorpark.
