College Roundup: Cal Poly evens its Big West volleyball record

Raeann Greisen had 16 kills and five digs as the Cal Poly volleyball team beat Cal State Fullerton 3-1 on Friday night at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym.

The Mustangs’ Hannah Schleis added 12 kills in the 25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21 win.

Cal Poly’s only dropped set went back and forth as the Mustangs were down 23-22 before Holland Crenshaw served out the set for the Titans (6-11, 0-4 Big West Conference).

Taylor Nelson had 42 assists and 11 digs, and Nicole Kessler had 17 digs and five assists for Cal Poly (7-7, 2-2 Big West).


UC Davis 2, Cal Poly 0

The Mustangs mustered 23 shots, 13 of them on goal, but failed to score in their second straight Big West loss.

Cal Poly’s Elise Krieghoff had four shots, and Megan Abutin added three more, but they were unable to beat the Aggies’ Taylor Jern, who registered 13 saves to keep the Mustangs (6-8, 1-2-0) scoreless.

Haley Hughes scored in the 25th minute and again in the 60th to improve for UC Davis (4-7-3, 1-0-2).



Cal Poly sophomore Garrett Auproux had two wins.

Auproux swept Grand Canyon’s Philip Kuehnen 6-3, 6-3. He later played a doubles match with Lucas Lesoeur and they beat the UC San Diego team of Horea Porutiu and Kona Luu 8-5.

The Mustangs’ Devin Barber also won a singles match 6-4, 6-4 over Lopes’ Arjun Bal. The doubles team of Naveen Beasley and Axel Damiens also won their match 8-5. Beasley later went on to lose his singles match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to UC Davis’ Bryce McKelvie. Lesoeur lost his singles match, as well, losing 6-3, 6-2.


Cal Poly’s Ben Donovan and Corey Pang had a rough day, losing all of their matches in San Francisco.

Donovan and Pang started the day dropping the opener to Stanford’s Tom Fawcett and Yale Goldberg 8-5.

In singles, Donovan lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to Stanford’s Robert Stineman, and Pang lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 against Sam Bertram from Santa Clara.


Cuesta 33, Bakersfield 9

John Sinclair in the 165-pound weight class and Joe Else in the 174 class both won by pin to lead Cuesta (2-3) to the dual win.

Connor Pollock (149) won a close match 10-9 over Greg Pagala and Cuesta’s George Sakkas (141) won 5-2 over Arik Onsarez.

Heavyweight Brett Kimball won 2-0 against Jacob Hall.

Cuesta is ranked fourth in the state.

Cuesta at SBCC Invitational

Connor Fisher won the men’s race for Cuesta with a 4-mile time of 21:26.

The second place time was 21:53 from Jesus Salas of the College of Sequoias. Alex Hascal finished eighth (22:20), and Christopher Conrad finished in 21st place (22:56) for Cuesta. The Cougars finished second in the team standings with 82 points.

Glendale came in first with a score of 78, and Mt. SAC came in third with a score of 95.

Josselyn Beutler led Cuesta with a 26th-place finish (23:32) in the women’s 5K race. Nicole Peterson came in 27th with a time of 23:32, and Danielle DeJong came in 52nd with a time of 23:49. The winning time was 18:50.

Cuesta’s team came in eighth place overall with 224 points. Glendale won with 32.
