Area Baseball: Mathias hitless in Team USA victory

Cal Poly second baseman Mark Mathias was held without a hit, but the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team rolled to an 8-1 win over the host Netherlands on Wednesday.

Mathias finished 0 for 5 from his No. 3 spot in the batting order, hitting three fly balls and a pair of line drives. It was just the fifth time in 20 games with Team USA he has gone hitless.

The reigning Big West Field Player of the Year is hitting .310 with seven doubles, nine RBI and 13 runs during his stint.

UCLA’s James Kaprielian threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits wile striking out eight.

Fast start leads Indians over Reds

The North County Indians scored twice in the opening inning before getting five more in the third en route to an 8-5 summer collegiate baseball win over the Santa Maria Reds in Templeton.

San Luis Obispo native Davey Casciola drove in four runs and scored once on 2-of-5 hitting for the Indians (23-8), who outhit the Reds 13-8.

The first three hitters in the batting order — Sinjin Todd, Steve Pico and Johnny Balliet — each recorded three hits and scored at least one run. Todd, Balliet, Corbin Meikle and Bryan Kirkpatrick each had an RBI.

Templeton High graduate Spencer Howard got the win on the mound despite allowing five runs — all earned — six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.

Santa Maria scored all five of its runs in the fourth, and the Indians tacked on one in the eighth.

Cal Poly recruit Erich Uelmen pitched a hitless ninth for his second save in as many nights.
