Summer Collegiate Baseball Roundup: Blues give Fanning milestone victory

Jacob Hoyle doubled and drove in three runs to lead the San Luis Obispo Blues summer collegiate baseball team to a 6-5 home win over the Menlo Park Legends on Sunday, sweeping the series and giving coach Chal Fanning the 400th victory of his tenure.

The Blues (16-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead, and San Luis Obispo’s Andrew Vinson pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to pick up the save.

Locals help North County stay hot

Davey Casciola (two hits), Ben Polshuk and Kai Bedell each drove in a run, and the North County Indians cruised to a 3-0 summer collegiate baseball victory over the California Wahoos at Vineyard Athletic Park in Templeton.

Mac Stuart went 2 for 3 for the Indians, who improved to 8-4.

North County starter Bryan Kirkpatrick was the winning pitcher. The Atascadero High product tossed five innings, allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Cal Poly signee and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran High product Erich Uelmen picked up the save.

Mathias shines again for Team USA

Cal Poly infielder Mark Mathias singled for the second straight game for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team on Sunday, helping Team USA to a 4-2 victory over a Coastal Plains League Select squad in Cary, N.C.

Mathias played second base at Cal Poly this past season, but played first Sunday and third Saturday. He also drew a walk Sunday.
