Nick Burnham struck out six over seven innings on the mound and was 2 for 2 with three runs scored as the Cuesta College baseball team beat Santa Barbara 11-2 Tuesday in San Luis Obispo.
Burnham reached base four times, drawing two walks to go with his two hits.
After giving up a run in the first inning, the Cougars (8-21, 4-10 Western State Conference) scored two unearned runs in the third and got an RBI single from Joe Miller in the sixth.
Cuesta’s Nick Rutckyj was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and David Belt hit a bases-
clearing double to drive in three in the eighth.
The Cougars scored three runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Cal Poly women’s golf finishes seventh
Taylor Yoshitake and Jamie Corr placed in the top 20 as the Cal Poly women’s golf team posted a final-round score of 312 to finish seventh out of 11 teams at The Gold Rush at Yorba Linda Country Club.
Yoshitake carded a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 11th with a 12-over 228. Corr finished in a tie for 18th place, shooting a final-round 79 to end with a score of 231.
The Mustangs shot totals of 313 and 312 Monday before Tuesday’s 312.
Gonzaga’s Alice Kim was the only golfer under par in the tournament, winning with a 1-under 215. The Bulldogs took the team title with an 893.
Cal Poly hosts the Big West Championships beginning Sunday.
Cal Poly men’s tennis falls to Stanford
Ben Donovan won his singles match 6-3, 6-2 for the Cal Poly men’s tennis team, but the visiting Mustangs lost 4-2 at Stanford.
Donovan won 6-3, 6-2 and Jurgen De Jager won 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2), but those were the only two victories for Cal Poly (7-12).
