After giving up four runs in the first inning to Northern Illinois, the No. 11 Cal Poly baseball team rallied to win 11-9 at Baggett Stadium Thursday, sweeping its series with the Huskies.
Nick Torres was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, which scored Mark Mathias and tied the score at 8.
Torres ended the night with two RBI for Cal Poly (14-3).
The Mustangs took the lead in the seventh, when Jimmy Allen scored on a wild pitch, and they tacked on two more runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Brian Mundell.
Slater Lee started the night on the mound for Cal Poly, but was pulled in the second inning after giving up five hits and four runs.
Santa Barbara 7, Cuesta 4
Myles Franklin and Josh Falco belted doubles for the Cougars for the game’s only two extra-base hits.
Cuesta (4-14, 0-5 Western State Conference), had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning, but the batter flew out to end the game.
Cal Poly at NCAA Zone Championships
Mustang seniors Meaghan O’Meara and Sami McIntyre failed to advance out of the preliminaries of the 1-meter competition in the Air Force Academy’s Cadet Natatorium in
Colorado Springs. They compiled six-dive scores of 172. 40 and 158.40, respectively.
USC’s Haley Ishimatsu won the finals with a score of 580.2.
Cal Poly 6, Furman 1
Marco Comuzzo clinched the win for the Mustangs by defeating Adam Steryous 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in singles.
Ben Donovan won his singles match in two sets, and Cal Poly’s (6-8) doubles team of Marco Comuzzo and Matt Thomson won 8-7 (3).
The Mustangs’ Devin Barber and Corey Pang defeated Joel Cook and Matt Browne 8-7 (6) in doubles.
Cuesta 11, Moorpark 6
Summer Best went 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Cougars (19-9, 5-1 Western State Conference) on the road.
Cuesta’s Erin Pennington went 3 for 5 with two RBI, and Jenanne Ruck pitched a complete game.
