Cuesta baseball drops season opener to Riverside

Winning pitcher Angel Delgado held the Cuesta College baseball team to one run as Riverside beat the Cougars 5-1 on Friday in Cuesta’s season opener.

Delgado pitched six innings and struck out seven Cougars.

The only run for Cuesta came in the bottom of the the third inning when Steven Pico singled to drive in RJ Hassey. 

Evan Peterson pitched five innings for the Cougars, giving up three runs, four hits and striking out three. 

Scott Romuk came in to relieve Peterson and allowed two runs in the seventh.   

National volleyball honor for Cal Poly's Nelson

Cal Poly freshman volleyball player Taylor Nelson on Thursday was named PrepVolleyball.com’s national player of the year.

Nelson enrolled at Cal Poly in January after graduating early from Granite Bay High, where she led her team to a 45-0 record this past season and the California Division 1 state championship. Granite Bay became the first California team since 2000 to complete an undefeated season.

Nelson, a 6-foot setter, had 996 assists, 192 kills, 135 digs, 90 service aces and 61 blocks this past season.

Among her other numerous awards, Nelson was named the Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year and a USA Today high school sports All-American.
