The Cuesta College women’s basketball team was trailing 24-23 with five minutes to go in the first half, but used a 24-8 run to end the half and ended up blowing out San Jose City 97-47 Thursday night at the Las Positas Tournament in Livermore.
Danielle Simpson made all eight of her field-goal attempts and finished with 17 points and four rebounds for the Cougars (3-0), which outshot the Jaguars 63 percent to 39 percent for the game.
Courtney Chadwick had 17 points, and Miriam Zabinsky had 15 points and seven rebounds for Cuesta.
Cuesta outscored San Jose City 50-15 in the second half. San Jose City had 24 turnovers compared to seven for Cuesta.
Cal Poly men’s swim team in third place
The Cal Poly men’s swimming team is in third place out of five teams with 311 points, and the women are in 10th place out of 11 with 152 after the first day of the Arena Invitational at East Los Angeles College.
Mickey Mackle was second in the men’s 200-yard individual medley in 1 minutes, 49.92 seconds for the Mustangs. Sonny Fierro was third in the 500 freestyle in 4:28.02, which was just 0.34 seconds off the school record. Caleb Davies finished fourth in the 50 free in 20.52.
Allison de Peralta was 12th in the women’s 200 IM in 2:06.89 for Cal Poly. The 200 free relay team of Taylor Guy, Rachel Cleak, Emma Henderson and Jill Jones was fifth in 3:48.53.
