COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Cuesta College men’s basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference with a 83-54 win over Santa Barbara City College on Wednesday.
The Cougars led 41-30 at the half after they opened the game on a 16-0 run. Roberto Mantovani scored 25 points and had 25 rebounds, finishing 11-18 from the floor.
Rafael Eleftheriou had 18 points and seven rebounds and Evgeniy Moiseev had 15 points.
Benat Hevia had nine points and a team high four assists in 29 minutes. The Cougars finished 51 percent from the floor and 12-of-27 from 3-point range, and held the Vaqueros to 35 percent shooting overall and 26 percent from behind the arc.
With Moorpark’s loss to Allen Hancock, the Cougars (16-6) take first place with a 3-0 conference record.
Cuesta hosts Oxnard on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Cuesta women’s basketball team lost 68-58 to Santa Barbara City College on the road Wednesday.
Autumn Russell had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Connor Storlie had 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Cuesta jumped out to a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, but were stifled in the second, only recording nine points to the Vaqueros 19.
“Before the game we preached rebounding,” Cuesta coach Ron Barba said, “but they killed us on the glass at the end.”
Santa Barbara maintained its lead throughout the second half.
The Cougars fall to 6-13 overall and 1-3 in the Western State Conference.
Cuesta hosts Oxnard next Wednesday.
