Arroyo Grande comes alive in second half to beat Royal in first round of playoffs

The Arroyo Grande High rushing attack carried the Eagles to a first-round win, 45-21, in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs over Royal on Friday night in Arroyo Grande.

Eagles running back Alex Cecchi carried the ball 18 times for 193 yards and four touchdowns, and Bradley Mickey added 223 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Cecchi also added an interception.

Arroyo Grande led 17-13 at halftime before scoring four touchdowns in the second half to pull away.

Arroyo Grande linebacker Sam Ness and defensive lineman Cole Cunningham combined for three sacks and eight tackles. Killian Angell added two sacks.

With every Arroyo Grande touchdown coming on a run, the Eagles didn’t need the services of quarterback Sawyer May. He finished the game 6 of 12 for a modest 54 yards passing.

Joey DelaRosa added 13 carries for 109 yards rushing, part of the Eagles’ 567 yards on the ground.

Next Friday, Arroyo Grande will travel to Lancaster to take on Antelope Valley in the second round of the playoffs. Antelope Valley defeated Carpinteria 53-7 on Friday night.
