The Cuesta college men’s basketball team lost to Allan Hancock 83-69 on Saturday night as Arroyo Grande High graduate Matt Willkomm had 25 points for the Bulldogs.
The Cougars (11-7, 1-1 Western State Conference), jumped out to a 37-30 lead at the half before Hancock scored 53 points in the second half to secure the win.
Benat Hevia led Cuesta with 16 points and five rebounds, while Keshawn Liggins had 10 points.
Willkomm was 9 for 19 from the floor and 4 for 12 on 3-pointers.
Cal Poly 56, UC Santa Barbara 41
The Mustangs led 30-15 at halftime and maintained that margin to win on the road. Kristin Ale led the Mustangs (7-7, 2-0 Big West) with 14 points, and Hannah Gilbert and Ariana Elegado added 11 each.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Gauchos 42-29 and played solid defense, holding UC Santa Barbara (0-14, 0-1) to 28 percent shooting from the field.
Cuesta 83, Allan Hancock 65
The Cougars used a big run in the final minutes to pull out a win over the visiting Bulldogs, who kept the game within six points until the end of the second half.
“Ashley Gamber was huge for us,” Cuesta coach Ron Barba said. “Her grandmother passed away recently but she played really hard for her and us.”
Gamber came off the bench to score 16 points for the Cougars (15-5, 1-1), while Felicia Cabral had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Cal Poly 28, Brown 11
The Mustangs earned their first dual meet victory of the season over visiting Brown, as seven of 10 Mustang wrestlers won their matches.
Colton Schilling (141 pounds) and Jacob Leon (149) each pinned their opponents within 2:30.
Victor Trujillo (133), Dominic Kastl (174), Nick Fiegener (184), Nicolas Johnson (285) all won their matches, and Travis Berridge (165) earned a major decision as well.
