Morro Bay High graduate Matt Hansen made a run to the match play quarterfinals at this week’s 101st California Amateur Championships at La Cumbre Country Club.
He tied with Ben Geyer of Arbuckle through 18 holes but Geyer eventually won 4 and 3 on Hole No. 23.
Geyer had a clutch birdie on the par-4 18th to send the match into extra holes. He did not hold a lead until it was over Thursday.
Hansen, who’s entering his junior year at UC Davis, outlasted Peter Gibbs of Campbell in the round of 32 before beating Michael Weaver of Fresno in the round of 16.

Another All-American honor for Cal Poly's Haniger
Former Cal Poly standout outfielder Mitch Haniger earned his fifth and final All-American honor Friday, as he was named an All-West Region and All-American first-team member by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Haniger, who’s now an outfielder for the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, was on the second or third teams for the previous All-American honors.
Haniger was a second-team selection by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game. College Sports Madness named him to its third team.
He was not selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-American team.
Through Friday, Haniger was averaging .292 with seven hits, three RBI and one double in seven games for the Timber Rattlers.
