Champions Tour veteran Loren Roberts will be back in San Luis Obispo this weekend to defend his title in the 15th-annual Straight Down Fall Classic at the San Luis Obispo Country Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The two-man best-ball pro-am tournament will feature PGA Tour members Ricky Barnes, Charley Hoffman and Kevin Stadler, Nationwide Tour members Jeff Gove, Gunner Weibe, Jeff Brehaut and Travis Bertoni, and Roberts’ fellow Champions tour members Larry Mize, Scott Simpson, Dan Forsman and Tom Pernice Jr.
Also playing will be CBS TV correspondent Gary McCord and World Long Drive Champion Jamie Sadlowski.
Roberts, a San Luis Obispo native and former employee at the country club, is perhaps Cal Poly golf’s most successful alumnus. He has eight career PGA wins and 12 career wins on the Champions tour.
He and partner Mike Rowley won the Classic last year when Roberts drained a 40-foot putt on the 17th hole to seal the victory over the father/son combo Olin Browne and Olin Browne Jr.
Another former Mustang who will be playing is Bertoni, who graduated from Paso Robles High before attending Cal Poly.
Tambellini, who resides in Templeton, is also a county native. He graduated from Atascadero and played collegiately for USC and has three career victories on the Nationwide tour.
As a warm up to the main event, Straight Down is putting on the Woody Invitational Pro-Am today. One percent of the proceeds will benefit the ALS Association, which will support Lou Gehrig’s Disease research.
There is no admission to either day of the Straight Down and fans are encouraged to walk the course with the players.
