Behind Deontae Barnes’ two-touchdown game, Atascadero High’s football team shut out Pioneer Valley 14-0 on Friday night, to surpass the Panthers in the conference standings.
The Greyhounds (6-3, 3-2 PAC 7) seized an early lead in the third minute of the game with a 47-yard pass from quarterback Robert Berwick to Logan Sprouse that set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Barnes.
Despite having the ball on Pioneer Valley’s 1-yard line on its second possession, the Panthers held the Greyhounds lead at seven after recovering a fumble on a bad pitch to Barnes.
And Atascadero’s defense kept Pioneer Valley out of the end zone. The Greyhounds forced Panthers quarterback Jason Espinoza to complete just 6 of 17 passes, including two interceptions.
