Blues stay in thick of CCL race

The San Luis Obispo Blues summer collegiate baseball team scored twice in the fifth inning to rally for a 3-1 win over Team Vegas on Sunday.

The Blues (30-12, 21-11 California Collegiate League) closed to within a half-game of the first-place Santa Barbara Foresters, who split a doubleheader with Menlo Park.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, the Blues got a one-out RBI single from Chad Christensen to tie the score. After a single and a steal by Austin Flores, Christensen scored when former Paso Robles High standout Thomas Bernal reached on Team Vegas center fielder Jordan Hanley’s error.

San Luis Obispo added a run in the sixth when Dylan Gavin doubled, then scored on an errant throw while stealing third base.

Christensen and Flores each had two hits for the Blues.

Travis Huber (4-0) allowed a run in six innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out nine.Paul Sewald (2-3) took the loss for Team Vegas (14-12 CCL), allowing three runs — two earned — in 51⁄3 innings.
