Heading into the bottom of the eighth inning trailing 2-1, the San Luis Obispo Blues were looking for a much-needed spark.
They sure got it.
The Blues scored five runs in the eighth inning and held on to defeat the Menlo Park Legends 6-2 in a summer collegiate baseball game Saturday at SLO Stadium.
In the inning, Jo Jo Sharrar cranked a two-run double down the left-field line, Dylan Gavin hit a two-run double to left center and Brannon Champagne hit a sacrifice fly for the Blues (19-6).
It was too much to overcome for the Legends (15-9), who took a one-run lead after scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
“Overall, it was great team win,” Blues manager Chal Fanning said. “We needed the pitching to buckle down when it did, defense shined when it needed to and the offense capped it off. We had everything fire at the right time.”
Sharrar led the Blues at the plate after going 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Gavin went 1 for 4 with two RBI.
The Blues go for a sweep today at 1 p.m.
