Howell hits two homers as Rattlers beats Oaks

Daniel Howell hit two home runs to power the San Luis Obispo Rattlers to a 10-2 win over the Conejo Oaks in a summer collegiate baseball game Saturday in Thousand Oaks.

Howell’s first homer, a two-run shot in the second inning, gave the Rattlers an early 2-0 lead. He added a three-run home run in the fourth to make the score 7-0.

Kirk Fridrich got the win for San Luis Obispo (20-26, 10-25 California Collegiate League), allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Robert Vickers added two hits, walked twice and scored three runs for the Rattlers while incoming Cal Poly freshman Jimmy Allen had two hits and an RBI.

Cal Poly reliever Jeff Johnson struck out two in an inning of relief, allowing one hit for San Luis Obispo.

Dylan Mendoza turned in his best performance of the summer, striking out 10 and scattering three hits in 72⁄3 innings to get the win for the Blues (31-17, 23-12 CCL).

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Dylan Gavin scored on a botched pickoff attempt.

Gavin also had the only extra-base hit of the game, an RBI double in the eighth inning.

Sean Johnson picked up his 13th save of the summer, needing just eight pitches to get through a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
