Blues start slow, miss out on sweep

Riley Moore doubled in two runs during a four-run first inning as the Santa Barbara Foresters beat the San Luis Obispo Blues 4-1 in a summer collegiate baseball game Sunday in Santa Barbara.

The Blues had won the first two games of the California Collegiate League series, but fell three games behind the Foresters with Sunday’s loss.

Left-hander Dylan Mendoza struck out seven in five innings for the Blues (27-15, 21-11 CCL) but allowed all four runs — three earned — in the first inning.

With runners on first and third and one out in the first, Mendoza got clean up hitter Jeff McVaney to hit a ground ball to third base, but a throwing error allowed the first run to score and set up Moore’s two-run double.

Left-hander Chris Joyce went 61⁄3 innings, allowing one run and striking out five for the Foresters (33-9, 23-7 CCL). Cody Martin pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his eighth save of the season.

Andrew Collazo had two hits and scored the lone run for the Blues. Ryan Aguayo went 1 for 3 with an RBI.Blues reliever Joe Pond tossed two shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

Santa Maria Valley Packers 6, San Luis Obispo Rattlers 0Outfielder Chris Mallory hit two home runs to power Santa Maria to a CCL win at home.

Right-hander Chad Caraccioli allowed three runs — two earned — in four innings, striking out five and walking four for the Rattlers (18-23, 8-22 CCL).

The Rattlers managed just four hits.

The Packers (22-17, 15-14 CCL) got eight shutout innings from right-hander Ryan Plum, who walked three and struck out seven.
