Blues shut out Packers in baseball road win

Cal State Fullerton’s Colin O’Connell pitched eight strong innings to lead the San Luis Obispo Blues to a 3-0 win over the Santa Maria Packers in a summer collegiate baseball game on Friday at John Osbourne Field in Santa Maria.

Matt Juengel had two hits with an RBI and a run for the Blues, and A.J. Robinson added two hits and scored once to provide O’Connell all the offense he needed.

O’Connell threw just 80 pitches to get through eight innings, allowing two hits while striking out 12 and walking one.

Sean Johnson pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his eighth save of the season for San Luis Obispo (22-11, 16-7 California Collegiate League).

The Blues trail the Santa Barbara Foresters (26-7, 16-5) by a game in the league standings.

San Luis Obispo Rattlers 6, Team Vegas 0

Joe Etcheverry narrowly missed a grand slam but settled for a three-run double with two outs in the eighth inning to lead San Luis Obispo at SLO Stadium.

Richie Mirowski picked up the win for the Rattlers (15-17, 6-16 CCL), allowing five hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The Cal Poly duo of Mason Radeke and Jeff Johnson each threw an inning of perfect relief with each pitcher striking out two.

Etcheverry, Bobby Buckner, Jimmy Allen and Daniel Howell had two hits apiece for the Rattlers, who have won five in a row.

San Luis Obispo closer Marc Damon pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two in a non-save situation.
