Blues beat Packers in California Rawlings Cup

The San Luis Obispo Blues jumped out to a five-run lead then held on to beat the Santa Maria Packers 5-3 in the 2010 California Rawlings Cup at SLO Stadium.

The Blues pounded out 11 hits, including nine singles. Cory Burleson had three singles for San Luis Obispo (20-11), while Matt Orloff and Mike Kindel each had two hits including a double.

Dylan Mendoza (3-0) got the win for the Blues, pitching two scoreless innings of middle relief after Justin Lindsey allowed just one hit in four innings with six strikeouts.

Sean Johnson picked up his seventh save of the season, striking out three in the ninth.

Kline finishes in top-10 twice

Cal Poly senior-to-be Peter Kline earned a pair of top-10 finishes in the Los Angeles Grand Prix at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium at USC.

Kline placed fifth in the 400 individual medley on Saturday, timed in a personal-best 4:29.75.

Kline, who qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships in three events last March, will compete in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley today.

On Friday, Kline placed ninth in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 5.80 seconds.

Kline also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team which placed ninth in 3:36.18. David LaFlamme, Chase Nick and Dane Philpot also swam on the foursome.
