Banuelos loses, Mendes wins in MMA fights in Sacramento

Former Cal Poly wrestlers Antonio Banuelos and Chad Mendes competed on the inaugural World Extreme Cagefighting pay-per-view card at Arco Arena in Sacramento on Saturday.

Banuelos lost a unanimous decision to Scott Jorgensen in the first pay-per-view. Banuelos and Jorgensen have now split a pair of fights. Jorgensen moves a step closer to a bantamweight title fight with the victory, winning 29-28 decisions on all three judges’ cards.

Mendes, the 2008 Cal Poly Athlete of the Year after a runner-up finish at the NCAA wrestling championships, beat Anthony Morrison via a guillotine choke at 2:14 of the first round to remain undefeated in his mixed martial arts career.

The victory was the second submission of Mendes’ career, his first being in his pro debut in 2008.
