Laura Coombs’ fourth-place finish at the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships in Hagg Lake, Ore., on June 30 was one of four qualifying times posted by a local triathlete.
Coombs, from San Luis Obispo, finished the 11⁄2Kswim, 40Kbike and 10K run in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 59 seconds. By placing as one of the top-16 racers in her age division (women age 20-24), she qualified to compete for Team USA in the 2007World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, on Sept. 1-2.
The other three local qualifiers included Evan Rudd from San Luis Obispo, Ashley Erickson from San Luis Obispo and Erin Reed from Arroyo Grande. Rudd placed fifth in the male age 20-24 division with a time of 2:02:02. Erickson (2:25:00) was 11th in the female age 20-24 division, while Reed (2:18:44) placed 10th in the female 30-34 division.
Other local competitors included two racers in the men’s 35-39 division. Matt Thibodeau (2:08:26) from San Luis Obispo placed 17th and Scott Machado (2:12:10) from San Luis Obispo placed 23rd.

In the men’s 20-24 division, Brett Brown (2:11:36) from Grover Beach placed 31st and Cal Poly student Paul Lebarton (2:156:43) placed 36th.
