Avila Beach’s discarded cigarette butts ignite fire concern

While I was impressed with how clean Avila Bay Drive appeared after the weekend reggae concert, I was also struck by the lingering cigarette butts discarded along both sides of the road near the Dog Beach area. I stopped counting after 90!

With the increased number of grass fires, we are at risk here should even one of these butts, not fully extinguished, get blown into the nearby dried grass.

It seems that walkers and parkers who do not care about properly discarding their butts ought to be reminded with the potential of a fine. Is it time to keep butts off the streets as well as the beaches? Let’s not wait for that one spark to ignite our awareness and action.
