Fear not, America — let’s take our fair share of climate-drought-tyranny-famine-ISIL-war-related Syrian refugees. “Save us from hell,” they plead.
The governors of the 27 balky states have no legal power to refuse them. The U.S. is a party to a 1951 convention that gives these refugees rights, and we as a receiving nation have responsibilities to them.
According to the International Rescue Committee, these are middle-class people who will assimilate quickly here — as have other oppressed peoples from war zones. They will add to our diversity and strength.
Tiny Jordan has taken more than 1 million of these refugees. How can we not keep our stated promise to take a mere 10,000 — or more?
