Fines keep us safer

In Joetopia, June 14, Joe Tarica said he doesn’t like where the money goes when a person pays a fine for running a flashing red light. He suggests that a group of moving violations (such as speeding and texting while driving) should be used as an “opportunity for education [by the police] instead of punishment.”

These are victimless crimes only when no one is killed or maimed by drivers who are texting, running red lights, or recklessly speeding.

I have a better idea. Let’s increase the fines, use the money to train more law enforcement specifically for moving violations and see whether our roads will be safer.
