Victor Davis Hanson’s great column on May 30 (“Foreign policy leaves U.S. knocking on war’s door”) points out a fundamental flaw of human nature, politicians in particular. They simply do not learn from history. They always believe that everything will turn out differently under their stewardship. If we just treat the bad guys nicely, they will see the error of their ways and learn to love us!
Putin will never love us no matter how many reset buttons we push! The ayatollah despises everything about us! The Islamic State hates us passionately! China is trying to destroy our economy, and the rest of the world, including our former allies, look upon us with cool disdain.
We are the upstart country who outgrew our britches and suddenly became ashamed of being the champion of freedom.
If we do not value liberty enough to stand up for it, we will ultimately lose our own freedom. Predators are all around us, and they feed upon weakness. They only respect strength.
Smoke your pot, collect your dole, but just once in a while appreciate your freedom and the hundreds of thousands of Americans who gave their lives and limbs to provide it for you.
