In his April 20 letter, Libertarian Gary Kirkland attempts to frame the Las Pilitas quarry issue as a simple matter of property rights, where the owners of the land should be allowed to do as they wish with it. This is both misguided and misleading.
It is misguided because it ignores the more basic rights of surrounding owners to quiet enjoyment of their properties. It is misleading because substantial impacts of this project do not occur on private property but on public roads.
It is interesting to me that the claim of property rights is so often used by those who wish to change the nature of an area and trump the property rights of those who simply wish to retain the nature of properties they have invested their lives in.
