Gambling on Diablo

The Tribune’s March 22 editorial, “PG&E must work closely with public safety panel,” points out the need for PG&E to fully respond to questions raised by the Independent Peer Review Panel.

We cannot afford to gamble with the ability of the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant to withstand an earthquake that one or more of the 13 faults surrounding Diablo might generate.

However, The Tribune’s editorial board appears to be indulging in unjustified optimism when it says, “Odds are, the Diablo Canyon Power Plant will never be threatened by a cataclysmic quake.” But guess what the owners of the Fukushima nuclear plant were saying on March 10, 2011?

Fukushima teaches us that even very long odds are not acceptable when the consequences of being wrong are so catastrophic.
