John Peschong’s opinion piece against the establishment of the Chumash Heritage Marine Sanctuary was well researched. As mentioned, the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference, of which Morro Bay and Port San Luis Obispo are members, has a legislative policy recommending the suspension of expansion of existing sanctuaries until certain existing problems are remediated.
Bringing a sanctuary will increase the difficulty of doing any work in the harbors. There will be no local control. If the city of Morro Bay is seriously concerned about its commercial and sports fishermen, it should say “no” to the Chumash Heritage Marine Sanctuary.
