I am a student of Central Coast New Tech, and a student representative who frequents monthly board meetings. I’m always proud to represent our school’s collaborative problem-solving curriculum, and after reading “Lucia Mar teachers rally for raises at district board meeting” (Jan. 27), I thought an opinion from a student that works in both these school and board settings would be much appreciated.
During the meeting on Jan. 27, there were a few important things I experienced.
After presenting, I watched the teacher walkout, and the board budgeting presentation thereafter. I appreciated the teacher action in unionization, however I was at a loss. I had thought that a point would be made after, not before, the board had submitted important information about teacher’s pay.
I’ve felt conflicted over this. These teachers work to provide for me, but the board works to provide for these teachers, and I didn’t see a straightforward solution anywhere. At CCNTH, communication is important. I’ve learned that even should resolution not be immediately visible, finding ways to work together is the next closest thing. I hope that we can know this without budgeting issue, and that I can see what I learn take place in LMUSD today.
